How to Find Out if Your Used Car is Part of a Safety Recall
Not many drivers think a car safety recall is a big deal; it is, and not paying attention to it could cost you your life. More than 20 injuries and 24 deaths have been linked to a faulty airbag inflator. According to Consumer Reports, the recall now affects 19 automakers and 183 models, covering airbags in nearly 42 million vehicles.
Hundreds of recalls are issued every year affecting 30.7 million cars. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall compliance rate is only 44 percent for drivers of vehicles five years old or older and drivers of used cars, compared to 83 percent for newer vehicles.
Recalls are issued when the NHTSA or an auto manufacturer determines that a vehicle equipment creates an “unreasonable safety risk” or fails to meet minimum safety standards. Even though new cars cannot be sold with an unrepaired recall, consumers don’t have the same protections when purchasing used cars.
If you drive a used car, you can’t assume you’ll get a recall notice by mail. It can be difficult for car manufacturers to find you if you own an older or used car.
Here are some ways to find out about future recalls for your vehicle:
Check with the NHTSA. With a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), NHTSA's new search tool lets you know if a specific vehicle has not been repaired as part of a safety recall in the last 15 years. You can call NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or subscribe to NHTSA’s email alerts to receive updates when a manufacturer reports a new recall for the same brand and model year of your car.
Update your car’s registration. Make sure it has the correct mailing address. Automakers use vehicle registration data to send out notifications by mail. If they don’t have your correct address, you won’t receive recall notices.
Sign up for free notifications. You can also sign up for free notifications of new safety recalls for your car at SaferCar.gov, checktoprotectect.org or register your car at Carfax’s Vehicle Recall page or Consumer Report’s Car Recall Tracker, which will inform you of recalls affect your vehicle.
If you get a recall letter from an automaker, take it seriously! Make an appointment to get the work done as soon as possible.
