How Long Can My Used Car Last?

When shopping for a used car, it is always ideal to purchase a car with low mileage. An average of 12-15,000 miles a year is considered the norm, so a five-year-old car would ideally have on average of 60-75,000 miles. Cars with more mileage than that would be considered high mileage, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t last for many years.

Cars are more reliable and durable than they were 10 years ago. In this day and age, car owners are keeping their vehicles longer due to big improvements in technology, better quality equipment and car maintenance products.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average age of vehicles on the road is a little more than 11 years. It is projected that by 2019, the average vehicle is expected to be nearly 12 years old.

Keeping a car that has 200,000 miles has its benefits. One study estimates that it could result in a savings of $30,000 or more. Although there will be repairs along the way, at a higher mileage, the depreciation curve of the car flattens out. You can put the extra miles on the car without losing too much in value and after a time, you’ll be driving the car practically for free.

How do you make your used car last longer? First, select a reliable model and one with the latest safety features. Make sure the interior and exterior parts of the car are in good condition. Have the car inspected by an independent mechanic.

After that, it’s all up to you. The car will last as long as you take care of it. Check the vehicle’s maintenance schedule, service the car on time, change the fluids properly. When needing repairs, don’t opt for cheap parts. Always use the parts and fluids recommended by the manufacturer.

Even if your car does not last 200,000 miles, it will last longer if you give it proper and regular care.

Does Mileage or Age Matter More When Buying A Car?

Date: September 21, 2018 | Category: Car Shopping

When buying a used car, mileage is an important factor, but age can be a big factor, too. In some cases, it may matter more.

The norm for the “average” number of miles per year is 15,000 miles. So a car that is five years old with a mileage of 75,000 miles would be considered average.
