Always Read Your Used Car Owner’s Manual
When buying a used car, make sure the car owner’s manual is included. You should take the time to read through your car’s owner’s manual. Every car is different, especially these days with more technological advancements in newer used cars. Merely pressing buttons could get you in a lot of trouble, especially if you do so while driving the vehicle.
Here are just some important information a car owner’s manual provides:
Operation of instruments and controls. The manual will identify parts of the car, including your vehicle keys, the location of power door lock and window switches, hood lock release lever, parking break lever, side defroster outlets, the different light switches, wiper and washer switches.
An overview of the instrument panel. When you’re driving and a warning light suddenly turns on, don’t panic. Your manual has information on the different indicator symbols on the panel and identifies the warning light icons and what to do should they turn on.
Car set up. The manual will instruct you on how to set up your car, including using its keyless entry if installed, how to sync your car with your mobile phone or your garage door opener, how to set up its GPS system, its radio and sound system, to name but a few.
Car maintenance. The manual provides the manufacturer’s instructions on checking fluids, like coolant level, brake fluids, power steering fluid, how often to change the oil and what type oil to use. The manual will tell you how to fill the gas tank, what type of gas you should use and how to optimize gas mileage. It provides tire and tire inflation pressure information.
Trouble-shooting advice. The manual has instructions on what to do if a service reminder indicator or warning buzzer comes on, if your vehicle won’t start, if your engine stalls while driving, if you vehicle overheats, if you have a flat tire, if your vehicle needs to be towed, and other uncertain situations.
Driving tips for safe and efficient driving. Your manual provides driving tips not only during your car’s break-in period, which is typically the first 1,000 miles, but it gives advice on how to optimize your gas mileage or increase safety.
Warranty information. Along with your owner’s manual instructions is information on your warranty coverages, including general and limited warranties, your responsibilities for operation and maintenance, and how to obtain warranty service. In case your used car is still covered by the owner’s warranty, you must read this carefully to make sure you do not do anything to void your warranty.
Like your car registration and auto insurance information, your owner’s manual should always be kept in the glove compartment of your car.
