The Type of Used Car You Buy Should Match Your Lifestyle

Many factors need to be considered when you buy a used car. Keeping the cost of the car within your budget is, of course, the biggest factor, but you also have to decide on the type of car that’s right for you. It would be a shame if you buy a car just because it’s inexpensive even if it’s not right for you.

Parents with four or more kids in tow will certainly need a different type of vehicle than the average family of four, or a couple with one child or none. Types of vehicles that would comfortably fit six persons would be an SUV or a crossover, a minivan, or a station wagon.

Now consider your needs and lifestyle. Even if you are not a large family, you may still need a larger vehicle if you enjoy long distance trips and outdoor activities, such as camping, hiking, biking, etc. Consumer Reports recommends vehicles that are comfortable, quiet, with plenty of space for people and luggage (don’t forget the pets!), with reasonable fuel economy are the Toyota Camry Hybrid, Honda Accord, and Chevrolet Impala for sedans; Subaru Outback, Kia Sorento, Dodge Durango and Audi Q7 for SUVs, and the Toyota Sienna van.

Getting a new teen driver a used car instead of new is the best decision a parent can make. Think back to the time you got your first car and how often you bumped into things, like the mailbox, the garage door or other minor accident. Young teens don’t need a monster car, but they do need a used car that is safe, reliable, and easy to drive, like a Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic. CARFAX recommends the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima based on their excellent crash-test scores and safety features. Among 2016 models for teen drivers, U.S. News & World Report Best Cars recommends the Toyota Prius as best used small car; the Hyundai Tucson, best used small SUV; Toyota Camry, best used midsize car; and Buick LaCrosse, best used large car.

A student off to college may want a car that is reliable and comfortable for driving back and forth to school. On Edmunds’ list used cars for college students that “offer value and a little fun” are the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid, 2013 Volkswagen GTI, 2014 Mazda 3 and 2016 Toyota RAV4.

Once graduated and starting a new job, the choice of car for a young professional may matter more. Now joining the working world, the car they choose says a lot about them even if still not flush with money. Among great picks by Cars.com are the 2017 models of Volkswagen Golf GTI, Toyota Tacoma, Kia Optima, Subaru Outback, Honda Civic Hatch, Jeep Wrangler, and Mazda Miata.

Whatever type of used vehicle you select, don’t sacrifice safety. Make sure the vehicle is equipped with important features that will keep you and your family safe.

Why You Should Heed Car Safety Recalls

Date: September 5, 2019 | Category: Car Shopping
