Which Used Cars Have the Lowest Repair Incidents and Costs?
Buyers of used cars are most concerned about getting the best value out of their purchase. Each year CarMD.com ranks vehicles by year, brands, makes and category based on frequency of check engine light problems and average cost of repairs. This is useful information for used car buyers in Iowa who want a vehicle that is reliable with the fewest repair headaches and lowest costs.
Why focus on check engine light problems? As mentioned in an earlier blog on this site, your vehicle's check engine light will turn on to alert you that there is an issue with your car's electronic sensors or emission control system. The problem can be minor, like a loose gas cap, or they can be major and costly from replacing an ignition coil and spark plugs to damaged catalytic converter.
Based on repair information of more than 14.4 million in-use vehicles manufactured from 1996 through 2019 reporting check engine light incidents between October 1, 2018 and September 2019, the study found the vehicle brand with the lowest average repair cost for check engine problems in 2019 is the Kia, which had an average parts and labor estimate of $321, while the 2017 Subaru Outback had the lowest average car repair cost of $59.
CarMD found that over the past year, Mercedes ranked no. 1 as the brand least likely to have a check engine light on, followed by Mitsubishi and Buick. The 2017 Honda CR-V is the vehicle least likely to have a check engine light on among the 8,440 different model year 1996 to 2019 vehicles analyzed by CarMD in 2019.
